Choice of Media of Instruction by Schools in Linguistically Diverse Areas in Uganda

The Language of Instruction (LIE) Policy in Uganda allows schools to choose the media instruction (MOI) during first four years primary education. policy provides that English should be used right from P1 only urban areas and indigenous languages elsewhere. In practice, many schools, including peri-urban even rural ones, opt for or stop using earlier than stipulated by policy. This article identifies evaluates reasons choice MOI schools. A qualitative approach was collect analyse data participants purposively selected case identified were informed an interest easing teachers' work improving schools' general performance rather enhancing individual learner comprehension content assimilation. Recommendations are made reviewing policy, changing attitudes toward languages, embracing multilingualism as a tool achieving interactive comprehension-based learning.
